The Emergency Medical Responder programs in Alberta have changed!

The Program Standards set by Alberta College of Paramedics took effect January 1, 2019. Any program that starts on or after this date must adhere to these new standards. AHASTI has updated our program to meet these requirements.

Some exciting changes to our program include:
- increase in overall length to 240 hours.
- new entrance requirements.
- addition of 40 hour driving program including simulation and in-vehicle drive time.
- addition of the ITLS Basic program.
- addition of Patient Engagement, this is some basic clinical time practicing some skills on sick and/or not sick adults.

hdgPrerequisites

The following are the prerequisite that a student is required to have before being allowed into this course:

  • 18 years of age
  • Class 5 driver's license (no GDL) or equivalent
  • Standard First Aid with CPR level C - Must be current as of the start of the EMR program
  • English 30-1 or 30-2 or equivalent
  • Math 10C or 20-1 or Math 20 Applied or 20-2 or equivalent
  • Biology 30 or equivalent
  • OR Mature Student Status - details of experience and additional education will need to be provided.

The new AHASTI EMR 2019 program is 240 hours. Program class classroom dates are primarily in the first 6-8 weeks then the remainder is available to finish the additional required course components. Students may finish their program in as little as 8 weeks, but have 12 weeks for additional flexible scheduling should it be needed!

Please feel free to "register" yourself in the date/location you are interested in to be included on our interest list. Registration will ask for a credit card, but YOU WILL NOT BE CHARGED ANY FEES AT THIS TIME. This will simply hold your spot while you receive more information about the course and decide if you would like to take the program.

PROGRAM FEES
EMR program - $2500 Tuition (includes digital textbooks)

ITLS Trauma - $300-$450 (depending on where you take it)
Driving Course - $700-$1300 (depending on where you take it)
Other equipment and textbooks - $150 - $400 (depending on digital/hardcopy text, quality of equipment etc)

Full program for as low as approximately $3700!

Fees are estimated based on common costs, and may be significantly reduced based on student choices of program locations and materials.

Travel - there may be a requirement to travel to other locations within the program city and/or province for parts of this new program. Travel and all related expenses will be at the expense of the student and are not included into the course fees. Examples include: Patient Engagement time off site, travel from Red Deer to Calgary/Edmonton for ITLS and/or driving course components, etc.

Please also note: An additional $800 will appear on student enrolment contracts. This is required to be on the contract as per Alberta Advanced Education. Should you choose to pursue the Registration exam with the Alberta College of Paramedics**, you will pay this fee directly to them at that time.

** Please note you MUST be registered with the Alberta College of Paramedics in order to work as an EMR in the province of Alberta. Please ensure you go to www.collegeofparamedics.org and review the requirements of licensure.

hdgAdditional Information

This new 2019 EMR program is approved by the Alberta College of Paramedics at the Emergency Medical Responder level which permits candidates to pursue their practice permit through registration and provincial exam.

This program is licensed through Alberta Advanced Education under the Private Vocational Act. All terms of registration/payment schedules are for this program are regulated by a Student Enrolment Contract.
