Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) 2019

The Emergency Medical Responder programs in Alberta are changing!

The Program Standards set by Alberta College of Paramedics are set to take effect January 1, 2019. Any program that starts on or after this date must adhere to these new standards. AHASTI is updating our program to meet these requirements.

Some exciting changes to our program include:
- increase in overall length to at least 240 hours.
- new entrance requirements.
- addition of 40 hour driving program including simulation and in-vehicle drive time.
- addition of the ITLS Basic program.
- addition of Patient Engagement, this is some basic clinical time practicing some skills on sick and/or not sick adults.

240 hours


The following are the prerequisite that a student is required to have before being allowed into this course:

  • 18 years of age
  • Class 5 driver's license (no GDL) or equivalent
  • English 30-1 or 30-2 or equivalent
  • Math 10 Pure or 20-1 or Math 20 Applied or 20-2 or equivalent
  • Biology 30 or equivalent


The AHASTI EMR will be a minimum of 240 hours requiring a course time of at least 6 weeks, up to 15 weeks (schedule dependant).

Listed starts date are proposed start dates and are still subject to change. Please feel free to "register" yourself in the date to be included on our interest list for a January class. The interest list will be notified as changes are confirmed. YOU WILL NOT BE CHARGED ANY FEES AT THIS TIME.

Exact fees are still TBD. $2000 is an estimate of the new tuition fees, however additional fees for books and other specialty programs are still TBD as well.

Travel - there may be a requirement to travel to other locations for parts of this new program. Travel and all related expenses will be at the expense of the student and will not be included into the course fees. Examples include: Patient Engagement time off site, travel from Red Deer to Calgary for driving course components, etc. More detailed information will be made available as details are confirmed.

This program will be approved by the Alberta College of Paramedics at the Emergency Medical Responder level which permits candidates to pursue their practice permit and challenge the provincial exam.

This program will be licensed through Alberta Advanced Education under the Private Vocational Act. All terms of registration/payment schedules are for this program are regulated by a Student Enrolment Contract.
